Iterating on a Real-Time Ecosystem Simulator

Our challenge was to create a compelling gameplay loop from observing a balanced, real-time ecosystem. The first prototype was a pure simulator, beautiful but passive. The breakthrough came from testing a new gameplay structure where the player could introduce small, disruptive elements.

Iterative game experiments defined the player's role as a catalyst rather than a manager. We developed tools to introduce new species or environmental changes, then tasked the player with observing and documenting the cascade of effects. The experimental gameplay system became about understanding interconnectedness.

System prototyping then focused on creating a clear visual language for cause and effect, making complex ecological chains understandable. The pace of simulation was also adjusted to allow for meaningful observation and intervention. The experience evolved into a meditation on systemic impact.
